tinygold FAQ

Do I classify as an emerging artist?

Traditionally, an emerging artist is stated as a young artist who has been professionally exhibiting for under five years. However, we believe that an emerging artist is an artist of any age who is passionate about progressing into a professional arts practice, but at this moment is at the beginning stage of his or her art career. An emerging artist should have no age restriction, nor education or background limitations. An artist represented by a gallery can still be classified as emerging, provided they have made this distinction clear with their gallery. Artists who have been exhibiting for the most part of their arts practice, and who are able to make a full-time living producing art are classified as professional artists, or mid-career artists. tinygold is an organization whose main focus is on supporting only emerging artists.

I am represented by a gallery. Can I still exhibit at TFCG?

This depends on your relationship with your gallery. Artists who are represented are welcome to exhibit in TFCG provided they have sorted shared-commission rates with their galleries. It is up to the artist to inform the gallery of their intention to exhibit elsewhere.

Why is Tales from the Cold Ghost held during winter?

We stage the exhibition series during winter because we want to show both local and interstate audiences that the Gold Coast is more than just a city with an attractively bright sun and avid beach culture. There are artists that choose to live and make work here, and there are visitors who come here to participate in cultural events. Therefore our project aims to challenge the notion that the Gold Coast is a cultural dive by creating opportunities for this city, mainly towards promoting the city's independent-arts iconography during the 'quieter' times of winter.

Last year tinygold did not take commission for sold works, nor submission fees from artists. Why is this year different?

tinygold is an artist-run initiative that is run on a voluntary basis, which means we do not receive any payment for our administration and event organization work.

Last year, we launched both tinygold ARI and Tales from the Cold Ghost to introduce new audiences to the works produced by local artists. This year we are aiming to stage a bigger exhibition, therefore to be able to achieve this we absolutely need the support of local artists and the community!

Every dollar from your submission fee for this year's Tales from the Cold Ghost is going directly towards costs associated with staging the event. This includes maintenance and restitution of the space, public liability insurance, loans and purchases of equipment and materials, publicity expenditures, opening night materials etc. While commercial galleries ask for 50% commission for sold works, we are requesting a low fee of 15%. This ensures that the prices of your work remain affordable. Again, any fee from this exhibition goes back into organizing future tinygold projects. This way we are able to continue organizing artist-run events without regularly having to cruise through the baked beans aisle.

Do I qualify to enter Tales from the Cold Ghost if I live in Tweed, NSW?

We understand there are artists who live in Northern New South Wales, but who actively participate in art events based in Queensland. If you live just within the border, and feel that you are an artist whose practice is mostly based in the Sunshine State then please contact us, as we might make an exception under special circumstances.

Can I just send you a link to my website, and you can grab my submission details from there?

Each day we receive lots of e-mails from artists, and while we try our best to answer each query and look at all your works online we feel that it is fair for all artists interested in exhibiting at a tinygold show, that they submit works in a unison format. This means each artist is expected to fully read the submission criteria and submit all materials as detailed in the guidelines. This makes it easier for us to sort through submissions and file your work.

I would like to volunteer for the show. How do I go about doing this?

Last year we took in fifteen lovely volunteers, who helped us out during Opening Night on a range of sections, including event documentations, sales, food and beverage and security. We provided our volunteers with incentives, such as merchandise kindly donated by our sponsors. We'll be having a call-out in the next month or so for volunteers for Tales from the Cold Ghost. If you would like to be on our team hit us up on tinygold@gmail.com

When will your official website be up?

Working on it as we type! Two cookies and many source-coded naps and it'll be sparkly-ready! In the meantime feel free to play with us on myspace or facebook.

Where will Tales from the Cold Ghost II be held?

This year's exhibition will be staged at a massive industrial warehouse at Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast. The space is big enough to occupy the works of ten-fifteen artists. Selected artists will be invited to view the exhibition space in June. More details about the space will be revealed next month, so keep an eye peeled.

I'm part of a collaborative group. We'd like to propose our works for Tales from the Cold Ghost. Are we eligible?

Yes, collaborations are accepted, provided members of the group are emerging, and the artists are based in Queensland. E-mail us for any fine lines.

How do I price my work?

This is entirely up to you. You can price your work based on the amount of time you've spent producing it, the costs of the materials associated with creating it, the workmanship, or to be basic just how much you think the work is worth if you were all of a sudden approached by an interested buyer.

We accept works of any price scale. As indication, at our last show the prices that artists charged for their work ranged from $12.00 - $4,400.00

We also accept works that are not available for sale. We are more interested in promoting an artist's practice and giving artists room for experimentation and progress.

Submission Guidelines | Tales from the Cold Ghost II

Submission Guidelines

Project

tinygold is an artist-run initiative launched on the Gold Coast. Our main aim is to strengthen support networks between Queensland artists by providing avenues in which to conceptualize, produce, exhibit and promote local art practices.

Exhibition

Curated by tinygold, Tales from the Cold Ghost is a group show series held on the Gold Coast during winter. The exhibition acts as an annual survey of works produced by the best emerging artists from Queensland. Artists from a wide range of disciplines and artistic backgrounds are invited to submit works for Tales from the Cold Ghost II held August 23 –September 6, 2008. The city of Gold Coast is chosen for this series as a vehicle to further promote its unique art sector.

Artist Eligibility

Queensland-based emerging artists of contemporary and experimental practice are invited to exhibit. Emerging artists are artists who wish to further their career in the arts, but at this point are not yet classified in the industry as professional. Artists represented by galleries are allowed to enter, provided they are classified as emerging. There is no age limitation. Please note that preference for Tales from the Cold Ghost II will be given to artists who have not yet exhibited with tinygold.

Selection Criteria

Tales from the Cold Ghost is an open-theme exhibition. Artists will be selected based on the calibre of their work, the standard of their proposal, and on evidence that their participation in the exhibition will benefit their arts practice. The artists must be willing to demonstrate their ability to fulfil all requirements for the exhibition, and to work alongside other artists and the project directors towards establishing a successful group dynamic. Our timeline depends on the availability of spaces, therefore for this show we prefer to display works that have been completed or are in their last stage of production. Works need to be ready by late July. Please contact tinygold for more information.

Projects/works open to consideration include: contemporary/fine, experimental, cross-medium, large-scale, miniature, ephemeral, collaborative etc.

Mediums include: Painting, Mixed Media, Short film/Video Art, Installation/site-specific, Photomedia, New Media, Jewelry, Fashion, Live Art, Design etc.
